Sue Forthofer

Susan E. Forthofer has served on the Erie County Community Foundation’s Board and its Scholarship Committee since February 2021. Forthofer retired from Vermilion Local Schools in 2011 after teaching elementary school for 35 years.


She earned her Master of Elementary Education from Bowling Green State University and completed 45 Semester Hours of Post-Masters Coursework. Forthofer has her Permanent Certificate State of Ohio, Grades K-8.


Forthofer volunteers for Big Brothers/Sisters as a mentor for at risk students; for Lorain City Schools as an after-school tutor; and for Main Street Vermilion’s Chalk It Up children's activities. She also serves as Supervisor for Elementary Education Field Experience students at Ashland University, and as a Jewelry Consultant/Sales professional for Diamond Collection. Forthofer also taught Preschool (age 3) at Lakeview Baptist Church in Vermilion.


Forthofer also serves on the boards of directors for the Child Care Resource Center, Harbourtown Fine Arts Center, and Friends of Ritter Public Library. She has been involved with animal rescue and spay and neuter education for many years.


Forthofer lives in Vermilion, with her husband James A Forthofer, the current Mayor of Vermilion. Forthofer has two adult daughters and two wonderful stepdaughters. She enjoys reading, gardening, swimming, and spending time with her husband and her amazing friends.
